Speed Dating with Councillors?

Tonight, in an attempt to further promote The Local Democracy Campaign, a Political Speed Dating Session has been arranged with a group of young people at The Town Hall in Nuneaton.

What started out a number of years ago as Local Democracy Week has now evolved into a year long Campaign to maintain the momentum and promote greater understanding of the democratic process. This event sees the Council and Warwickshire County Council working together to encourage more young people to speak up on issues that relate to their community, and to help them understand how democracy works in the area.

Councillor Dennis Harvey, Leader of the Council explained:

“We hope that the evening will help to raise the awareness of young people about the services their local Council provides, and to give Councillors with an opportunity to find what issues are of concern to young people in their area. I would like to thank the local Youth Council and their members for playing a key role in supporting the event.”

Political Speed Dating is based on conventional speed dating and involves the Councillors moving around the room and having short 'dates' with the young people who will remain seated. Each 'date' will last a maximum of four minutes, during which time the young people can ask as many questions as they like except ones related to age, party affiliation and place of residence. Each of the Councillors will then be given a mark by those they have 'dated'.

Councillor Harvey concluded:

“It is hoped that this will be a fun way for young people to meet and find out what their Councillors actually do and how they represent young people's ideas, rights and views at a local level. Councillors will also be able to take away a greater understanding about the issues that currently face young people.”
