Residents help to shape Council budget

Year End Accounts
Residents have been helping to shape the Council’s budget for 2010/11 by completing questionnaires and attending numerous events.  Now all views will be taken into consideration ahead of the setting of the budget in February.

In an effort to provide best value for money services, the Council has been seeking the opinions of people who live and work in Nuneaton and Bedworth.  An online questionnaire was launched several months ago allowing residents to highlight the services which, in their opinion, are deserving of extra investment and the areas where spending should be reduced.

For the first time, the Town Hall also hosted a public debate specifically to discuss the budget.  Members of the public braved wintry conditions to voice their opinions during a positive debate where discussed topics included refuse and recycling collections, car parking charges and street cleansing, to name a few.

Other events held during recent months as part of the consultation have targeted groups from the voluntary sector and young people, with considerable success.

Peter Gilbert, Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said:
“I would like to thank everyone who made the effort to attend last week’s public debate on what was a bitterly cold night.  All of the residents who took part in the debate said that we should organise similar events in the future as they found it very useful.  This was the first time that the Council had held such an event and I would certainly consider doing it again as it was a good way of listening to the views of residents of the Borough.”

The Council leader also thanked everyone who has taken the time to complete questionnaires, which were published on the Council website, and attend any of the other consultation events.

Councillor Gilbert added:
“The response to the consultation has been very good and the whole exercise has been very helpful to us.  We have some big decisions to make this year so it was important that we listened to what the tax paying residents of the Borough had to say.  Views raised at the meeting will be discussed by Cabinet, along with the many responses we have had to the online questionnaires, as we prepare to set the budget for 2010/11.”
