Reduce, Reuse, Recycle this Christmas!

xmas cards
The season of goodwill and celebration is upon us which often means more rubbish than at any other time of the year!

This year, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is encouraging all residents to be aware of their waste and reduce the amount that gets sent for disposal by reducing, reusing and recycling.

Try these top tips to help reduce your waste over the festive period:

  • There are many items frequently used at Christmas which can go into your new brown lid recycling bin.  Glass bottles and jars, food and drinks cans and cartons, large biscuit and sweet tins and even the foil from the turkey can be placed into the main part of your bin!

  • Christmas cards can be placed into your paper and cardboard insert container, but if you’re feeling really creative, why not try cutting them up and creating your own cards for next year!

  • You can compost all your potato and sprout peelings at home using a compost bin. For more information about compost bins, call the Recycling Hotline on (024) 7637 6170 or visit our recycling pages.

  • Have you had new clothes for Christmas? Remember, you can use your pink textiles bag to recycle any old and unwanted clothing. Simply place your pink bag next to your brown lid bin on your recycling collection day.

  • If you have had a real Christmas tree on display, when you are finished with it, why not take it to the garden waste skip at Judkin’s Household Waste Recycling Centre? Alternatively, why not chop it up and keep it in your green bin until the garden waste collections resume in March or even plant it in your garden to use again next year!

  • For all of those new Christmas gadgets and toys, try and use re-useable batteries where possible, or recycle your old household batteries at your local participating supermarket or at Judkin’s Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Councillor Bill Sheppard, Portfolio holder for the Environment, said: “We all have extra waste over the festive period but by using our top recycling tips we can all do our bit to help the environment. I would like to wish all residents of Nuneaton and Bedworth a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and encourage them to continue recycling into 2012 and beyond!”
