'Pop Up' Performances Coming Soon
In 2010, while working with local teenagers who were photographing the George Eliot statue in Nuneaton town centre, a homeless gentleman who was bedding down for the night in the doorway of Debenhams called over with a warning not to poke fun at George Eliot or ‘she will come back to haunt you!’ This inspired Nuneaton born playwright Vanessa Oakes to write this short play.
Councillor Ian Lloyd, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said:
“These free public performances will help to bring alive our own history as a community for the people of Nuneaton and Bedworth. They are part of our innovative writer in residence programme based at the Museum and Art Gallery in Riversley Park which is funded by Arts Council England.”
Come rain or shine, the public is invited to attend performances of the short play and meet the infamous, well educated local layabout Mr Joseph Henry Liggins as he tells us his extraordinary story.
After being asked to leave Cambridge, Joseph Liggins (1801–1872) struggled for years to make a living before being wrongly identified as the author of ‘Scenes of Clerical Life’ and ‘Adam Bede.’
There will be 15 minute performances throughout Friday, January 20th and Saturday, January 21st at the following venues and locations:
- 11am - Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery
- 12pm - George Eliot Memorial Gardens (obelisk)
- 1pm - George Eliot Hotel (archway)
- 2pm - St. Nicholas Community Centre
- 3pm - Griff House, Coventry Road CV10 7PJ
