Play Ranger Service Gains Boost

Children Playing with the Play Rangers
Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is helping the Play Rangers scheme to build on its success by backing it with an additional £40,000 of funding in 2009.

In the current economic climate many families are forced to look for ways to reduce expenditure and unfortunately that may mean children missing out on recreational activities that involve cost. The additional funding to the Play Rangers will mean there are free children’s activities on offer all year round.

The Council run Play Rangers scheme is funded in bulk by the National Lottery and has been going since 2007. Supporting the Council’s objectives for play provision the Rangers are part of a national project to encourage children and young people to re-evaluate the importance of play, and encourage the use of parks and open spaces.

Importantly, all sessions are open access and free to all participants. The scheme runs for 50 weeks of the year they deliver the majority of their sessions in parks throughout the borough. All of the Rangers have experience working with children and undergo enhanced CRB checks.

Councillor Des O’Brien (portfolio holder for culture and recreation) said:

“The Play Ranger scheme is successful both in terms of its popularity, and in hitting its objectives. The scheme is vital in bringing to the forefront the importance of play and the benefits it provides. It is accessible to all children of the Borough without cost to them or their parents and runs virtually all year round. The additional funding will expand the service to make sure children from right across the Borough can get involved.”
