Olympic Flag flies over Nuneaton and Bedworth
At 2.30pm (GMT) on Sunday August 24th, China will hand the Olympic Flag to representatives of London 2012 and will signify the start of our tenure for the most prestigious sporting competition in the world – The Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games.
To celebrate this momentous occasion the London 2012 Committee is sending an Olympic Flag to every council in Britain that registered with them to receive one. Naturally, Nuneaton and Bedworth registered and we wait with anticipation for our flag.
On Sunday, 24th August, at 2.30pm all over Britain, councils will fly the official Olympic Flag.
A first in the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the iconic London Olympic Handover Flag will be raised in the borough simultaneously with regions around the UK.
Chairman of the London 2012 Organising Committee, Sebastian Coe said:
‘When the Mayor of London accepts the Olympic Flag on 24th August, the eyes of the world will turn to London and the UK as the next Summer Host City. It is a very important and exciting moment for us, and we want as many people as possible to join in the Handover celebrations. We are delighted that so many local authorities share our excitement and are proudly displaying the Olympic Handover Flag to mark this very special moment on our journey to 2012.”
Councillor Chris White, Chair of the LGA’s Culture, Tourism and Sport board, said:
“More than 400 councils have arranged flag-raising events for August 24th to mark the start of an exciting four years. Authorities are already investing in sports facilities and promoting healthier living to ensure the legacy of the Olympic Games will be long-lasting. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for every part of the country to enjoy a boom in business, tourism and sporting excellence, and councils are ready to seize the opportunity.”
There will be a short ceremony on the Town Hall steps at approximately 2.00pm prior to the flag being raised at 2.30pm precisely, in the presence of the Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth, Councillor Gerald Smith.
Culture and Recreation Cabinet Member Des O’Brien said:
“This is a great moment in history. The 2012 Olympics will show the world what Britain can do, and Nuneaton and Bedworth must be prepared to play its part. We are already short listed to be one of the training camps for the Olympic swimmers because of the Pingles Leisure Centre and hopefully we shall be selected to provide
this service which will enhance the status of the borough in the lead up to the Olympics.”
Leader of the Council, Councillor Marcus Jones echoed Councillor O’Brien’s words and added
“We must all give our support to the London 2012 Olympic Committee and ensure that come the day Britain is not found wanting.”
