Nuneaton and Bedworth Schools in Bloom 2008

Daisy
Judges from the Borough Council and the Lions clubs of both towns faced the agonising task of choosing the winners of the annual Nuneaton and Bedworth Schools in Bloom competition. Taking place over two days, the route took the judges on a non-stop tour of many of the Borough’s infant, junior and senior schools.

The judging criteria for the competition is quite varied, with issues such as recycling, composting and vegetable growing gaining as much credit as colourful displays of flowers. The most important aspect is the involvement of the children.

The judges said,

“Each time we arrived at a new school, we would be greeted by an enthusiastic group of children just waiting to show us the things they’ve achieved outside. This year has been one of the best yet; we’ve seen the clever and amusing use of recycled objects, excellent awareness of ‘green’ issues, and some of the best vegetables we’ve seen growing anywhere, including our own gardens!”

Councillor Des O’Brien, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Recreation said today,

“I’m encouraged by the awareness and enthusiasm that schools have for their environment, and my congratulations go to all the children involved. The environment and gardening in particular are not always easy to incorporate into the curriculum, and I extend my congratulations to all the teachers, teaching assistants and other school staff who have taken the time to do this good work.”
