Numbers of Cars Dumped Plummets
Figures released recently show that over the last 4 years Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has seen a 83.87% drop in the number of abandoned vehicles being reported.
In 2003 the council had to clear up a total of 502 abandoned vehicles, but last year this fell to just 81 and still falling. The Council says that a combination of tougher enforcement, new rules deterring would-be car dumpers and high scrap metal prices have all led to a massive drop in the number of wrecks being left on the streets.
Councillor David Bryden, cabinet member, said:
“A triple whammy of cracking down on would be dumpers, quicker clearing up by the Council and soaring metal prices are helping to win the battle against unsightly old bangers being left on our streets or land. People tell us that these eyesores make them feel unsafe in their own neighbourhood and figures like this show the Council is working hard to make people feel safe and secure.
A few years ago, you would have had to pay someone to take the abandoned cars away but now, scrap metal dealers will pay for the pleasure. This has definitely helped the situation but the Council is also playing an important role. We have listened to the concerns of local people and reacted accordingly.
Abandoned vehicles attract crime and the public rightly expects them to be moved quickly. If anyone sees an apparently abandoned vehicle, they can call the Council who will send someone out to deal with it quickly and efficiently. There is no room for complacency though, and we are doing all we can to make sure that cars are not dumped on our streets and when they are, they are cleared up as a top priority”
