Council condemns cemetery vandalism as "mindless"

Relatives of people whose memorials have been placed in the Garden of Rest in Oaston Road Cemetery are being contacted by the Council to inform them of the vandalism which has taken place overnight in the cemetery.

The Garden of Rest which contains memorials stones for people who have been cremated, has been targeted by vandals who have stolen the containers of floral tributes and scattered the contents throughout the cemetery. Approximately 150 memorials have been affected.

The damage was discovered by an officer during a routine inspection and the Police have now been contacted in order for an investigation to be launched.

Councillor Tony Lloyd, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Recreation spoke of his anger today saying;

“I am appalled by this act of mindless vandalism, which will cause such distress to the families of the people whose memorials have been damaged. This vandalism is on an unprecedented scale, and the officer who discovered it was indeed very upset herself.

If anyone saw anything suspicious last night, or has any information that might help bring the vandals to justice, please contact the Police directly or report it anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
