Look Out For The Green Form!
The Annual Canvass for the preparation of the 2006/2007 Register of Electors is about to
start, and a green electoral registration form will be delivered to each house in the Borough. The Canvass is conducted by reference to 15th October, 2006.
Everyone has to renew their registration every year – registering for council tax or other council services does not automatically register you to vote. If you are not registered, you may have problems with credit rating and access to some services and benefits.
Your local authority produces two versions of the Electoral Register, the FULL and the EDITED and when you fill in your electoral registration form, you can choose whether you want your details included in the edited register.
The FULL register has the names and addresses of everyone registered to vote and is updated monthly, (January to September). Anyone can look at it, but copies can only be supplied for certain purposes, such as elections and law enforcement. Credit reference agencies are also allowed to use the full register, but only to check your name and address if you are applying for credit, and to help stop ‘money laundering’. Anyone who has a copy of the full register would be committing a criminal offence if they unlawfully passed on information from it. You do not have a choice about your name and address being on the full register.
The EDITED register is available for general sale and can be used for any purpose. You can choose not to be on it. It is kept separate from the full register and also updated monthly. The edited register can be bought by any person, company or organisation and can be used for different purposes such as checking your identity and commercial activities such as marketing.
