Litter blitz on road

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council Crest
Work has begun on a full-scale blitz on litter which has become a problem on the A444 between Nuneaton and Coventry.

Litter is a problem on the road as a result of people throwing rubbish from moving vehicles.  The Waste and Cleansing department at the Council was initially planning to do the clean up in early December, but were unable to do so while traffic lights were being installed on the Griff Roundabout, this was pushed back to early in January, as cleansing officers were not allowed on the road while work was being done.

Heavy snow and ice meant that the January clean up was impossible but work has now started on cleaning the road, with further cleansing dates booked for Tuesday, February 2 and Wednesday, February 3.

The clean up job is not without its difficulties, and cost, as the Council is legally required to implement a full traffic management system which includes lane closures on the cleaning days.  This incurs considerable cost and although aware of the need to remove the litter, Waste and Cleansing Manager Sarah Elliott knows the cost could be avoided:

“If people take more responsibility for the environment and put their litter in the bin, this money would be available to spend on other resources.  That said, we are aware of the need to clean this sliproad and have been planning to do it since last year.  We ask motorists to drive carefully on the day of the clean up to ensure the safety of our officers.”

Councillor Nick Grant, portfolio holder for the environment, said: “This clean up is part of the Council’s new priority to fight ‘crime and grime’, which has seen extra resources put into it.”
