Help for Homeless this Christmas

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council Crest
Food parcels generously presented to the Council by a Nuneaton travel agent will be used to provide the homeless with food and drink over the festive period.

Every year, Co-op Travel in New Century Way encourages its staff and customers to make donations of food which are collected in cardboard boxes and then handed to the Council’s Housing Options team who re-distribute the parcels to local charities in most need.

This year has been no different and the travel agent this week presented the Council with its latest food collection.  Officers from the Housing Options team joined Portfolio Holder for Housing, Councillor Tony Lloyd, in receiving the food parcels at the store and thanking staff for their generosity.

Also present at the handover were representatives from the Christian Network, this year’s chosen recipients of the donation.  The Network is made up of the Salvation Army, the Life Church and Manor Court Baptist Church who work together to organise ‘soup kitchen’ drop in centres for local homeless people.  The food parcels collected by Co-op Travel will be handed out during these drop-in sessions over the festive and New Year period.

The Christian Network was chosen to receive the collections as the Housing Options team is currently working as a partner of the group, attending the soup kitchen sessions to engage with the homeless, and working together with the aim of implementing the ‘No Second Night Out’ homeless policy in the future.

Portfolio Holder for Housing, Councillor Tony Lloyd, said:
“It is important for us all to remember, especially at Christmas time, that there are some people in our communities who are less fortunate than others.  As a Council, we are committed to reducing homelessness and are working hard with partners to address the problem.

“Unfortunately, this isn’t a problem that is going to disappear overnight so it is with great pleasure that we are able to present this donation to local charities which are dedicated to supporting the homeless at this, and all other, times of the year.  Special thanks must go to Co-op Travel which has once again gone the extra mile to make this all possible.”
