Giant Pumpkin Competition Launched

Pumpkin
Can you grow the biggest pumpkin?  That’s the question being posed to all children between the ages of 4 – 14 who live in the Borough of Nuneaton and Bedworth.

As part of the exciting two day Horticultural Show that is to run on 1st and 2nd September 2007 at the Miners’ Welfare Park, Bedworth and District Horticultural Council and Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council are giving youngsters the opportunity to grow their own giant pumpkin.  Letters have been written out to all School and Community Groups in the Borough to ask for children to enter into the competition.

All children who enter will be supplied with a Pumpkin pack which will include the rules of the competition, an entry application form, pumpkin seeds and instructions on how to grow it and a record card so a note of how the pumpkin is growing can be kept.  Each month young growers will be asked to record the details of the circumference of the pumpkin with judging taking place towards the end of August, those with the largest pumpkins will be entered into Class 43 of the Horticultural Show, with an opportunity to win some fabulous prizes for both themselves and their school/organisation.

If anyone would like to receive a pumpkin pack please contact Jo Robinson on (024) 7637 6042 or e-mail on joanne.robinson@nuneatonandbedworth.gov.uk for more information.

Councillor Anthony Lloyd, Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation said today:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for all the children of the Borough who wish to take part in this competition and learn how to grow a pumpkin from seed.  I am looking forward to the Horticultural Show in September and would like to give my very best wishes to all entrants for their Pumpkin growing.”
