Get Fit and Green this Wimbledon Fortnight!

Tennis
Sporty tennis players and council officers have joined forces this year to promote recycling during the Wimbledon Championship fortnight.

There is nothing that suggests the British summer more than watching a nail biting Wimbledon match with a cool glass of white wine, some Pimms and strawberries and cream!  It is what happens to the waste afterwards that council officers are concerned about.  Cans and bottles can be recycled in the red box collection and any strawberry leaves can be composted in your own home composter.

Sarah Lloyd, Waste Education Officer says:

‘During sporting events the amount of waste produced always increases, as people stay at home and enjoy watching the matches on tv.  We want to encourage people to dispose of this waste in the most environmentally friendly way possible, and Nuneaton Tennis Club very kindly agreed to help me do this!’

The tennis club players posed for a photo shoot with the red boxes to remind people to use the service.

Councillor Geoff Ashford, Portfolio Holder for Health and the Environment says:

‘It is great to see that members of our local community are helping to promote environmentally friendly messages.  Its so important that we all learn to work together on issues such as recycling, so that we can really make a difference!’

As well as promoting the green message, the players also wanted to advertise getting fit through playing tennis this year.

Red Box
Mark Whitelegg, Chairman of Nuneaton Tennis Club says:

‘We were delighted to help promote recycling during the Wimbledon championship, as we all know how important recycling is for the environment.  We also want to use this opportunity to promote tennis as a fun way to get fit this summer!  It is a really easy game to get into and people of any age can get involved.  We are always on the look out for a budding Roger Federer!’

The tennis club is open to new members every Monday night at 6:30 on their courts at Caldwell Road, Nuneaton.  For more information see the website at http://nuneaton.totaltennis.net/home/home.asp
