Fairtrade Fortnight

Fair Trade Logo
As Fairtrade Fortnight 2008 runs from Monday 25th February– 9th March this is a great time to share the message of Fairtrade and how it helps transform lives.  Many individuals, businesses, schools, community and religious groups already support Fairtrade within the Borough by stocking or using Fairtrade products.  By working together we can work towards achieving Fairtrade Town Status.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Council is backing a plan to make Nuneaton and Bedworth a Fairtrade Town. The purpose of a Fairtrade Town is to support the Fairtrade Foundations aim of tackling poverty by enabling disadvantaged producers from poor countries to receive a better deal.

Councillor Geoff Ashford Cabinet Member for Health and Environment says:

“We have many organisations and businesses in the Borough who are committed to helping producers in the developing world achieve a realistic price for their efforts. Creating a Fairtrade Steering Group is about pulling together all the activities that are currently going on and working together to achieve Fairtrade Status for the Borough.”

To achieve the status 5 goals must be met:
  • The Council has to pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade and serve Fairtrade tea and coffee at its meetings and in offices and canteens.
  • A range of Fairtrade products must be readily available in the area’s shops and served in cafes and catering establishments.
  • Fairtrade products must be used by a number of work places and community organisations, such as churches and schools.
  • Attract popular support for the campaign.
  • A Fairtrade Steering Group must be convened.

There are more than 3,000 Fairtrade certified products on the market now which includes: coffee, tea, chocolate, bananas, biscuits, honey, jams, rice, wines, flowers, sports balls, cotton products to name but a few.  Purchasing products with the Fairtrade Mark has never been easier and it ensures that disadvantaged producers are getting a better deal.

We are looking to recruit supporters – groups or individuals to raise awareness of Fairtrade in Nuneaton and Bedworth.  If you are interested in joining a Fairtrade Steering Group or just want to find out more about Fairtrade, then please contact: sarah.perry@nuneatonandbedworth.gov.uk or telephone (024) 7637 6346.
