Does Gender Equality Exist in Society Today?

This is just one of the questions the Council is asking surrounding its forthcoming Gender Equality Scheme it plans to launch in April 2007.

The Equalities Act 2006 has introduced legislation which places new duties on public authorities to promote Gender Equality. The Council now has a duty to eliminate unlawful discrimination and harassment and promote equality of opportunity between men and women.

To help the Council build its first scheme, the Council have put together a questionnaire to seek the views of the public to shape and prioritise the services the Council provides to take into consideration Gender Equality.

Councillor Don Navarro, Portfolio Holder for Central services says

‘The Borough Council is fully committed to eliminating gender inequality and promoting equality between men and women. We recognise that there are gender differences in people’s opportunities, which services they gain access to, the types of jobs they do and how well children achieve at school.

We are aware that other equality issues affect people’s lives and that a ‘one size fits all’ approach is not always the answer. I am pleased with the Council’s approach and the progress it has made in addressing gender equality. We know that gender equality will not be achieved overnight; however this scheme and questionnaire is the first step in the right direction to achieve our goals’

The questionnaire is available by clicking the link below, or you can request a questionnaire and/or further information on the Gender Equality Scheme from Craig Dicken on 024 7637 6333 or via email, craig.dicken@nuneatonandbedworth.gov.uk.
