Couple Jailed For Blatant Housing Benefit Deception

Money
After a court trial at the Nuneaton Justice Centre that lasted for 3 days, a Nuneaton couple have been jailed for 16 weeks each because they failed to declare that they were partners.

Donna Morgan declared to the Council’s Housing Benefits Unit that she was a single mother working part time, paying rent to her landlord David Tully for his property at The Raywoods, when in fact they were living together as a couple.

The deception went on between March 2001 and October 2004 and the overpayment of Housing Benefit was calculated at nearly £10,500.

District Judge Gasgoine stated in his summing up that “this was a blatant fraud carried out over a considerable period of time.” Tully earned £500 per week net whilst Morgan received Tax Credits and wages of up to £900 a month yet had the rent paid for by the Council.

Steve Nott, the Corporate Services Director, says:

‘This case demonstrates the very serious consequences if people fail to declare their true circumstances to the Council.  We want people to receive the benefits they are entitled to but I must stress the importance of letting the Council know all facts relating to their claims’

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council have a Free Confidential Benefit Fraud Hotline which members of the public can use 24 hours a day to report benefit fraud. The number is 0800 389 3537.
