Council Warns Against Bogus Callers

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough housing tenants are being warned against handing money over to bogus individuals posing as Council Contractors. The Council has been made aware of an incident that occurred at one of its blocks of flats in Nuneaton earlier this week where a man persuaded an elderly lady to hand over £30 as an “inspection fee” to allow him to carry out a survey for the Council to install new security lights. Police are investigating the incident.

Councillor Bob Copland, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing said:

“I am very saddened indeed to hear that one of our elderly housing tenants has been tricked into handing money over to someone pretending to be from the Council. I would like to emphasise to all Council tenants that under no circumstances would the Council or its appointed contractors require any type of up-front payments for improvement work carried out to their homes and so under no circumstances should people hand money over. All Council employees and our approved contractors’ employees carry identification badges with them and people should always ask to see these before letting them into their homes. Should anyone have any doubt about the identity of someone saying they are from the Council they can telephone the Council via either the main switchboard number 024 7637 6376 or via the housing repairs enquiry number 024 7637 6344.”

Brent Davis, the Council’s Assistant Director for Corporate Property who looks after repairs and improvements to the Councils housing stock added:

“In terms of improvement work to Council homes, including the installation of additional security lighting and door entry systems, the Council always writes to tenants in advance of the works taking place and any Council employees or our contractors arriving on site. I would reiterate Councillor Copland’s advice that if people are in any doubt at all about the identity of someone saying they are from the Council they should check with us before letting them into their homes.”
