Council Clamps Down on Alcohol Offences

Alcohol Warning
Acting on the results of a public perceptions survey carried out in summer 2006, when 96% of people said there should be a ban on drinking alcohol outside of licensed premises to reduce public disorder, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is now proposing to make an Alcohol Designation Order to cover the whole Borough from May 2007.

The Order would work by allowing a Police Officer to require a person drinking alcohol to stop drinking or to hand over any alcohol container.  Failure to do so would be an arrestable offence, with a fine up to £500 on conviction.

The Order would not apply to licensed premises, registered clubs, pavement cafes or private dwellings, but would cover all other highway and public areas such as parks and open spaces.

Councillor Bill Hancox says

“As the Chair of the Working Group established to look into the possible implementation of Alcohol Restricted Areas, I am pleased that the Council has now agreed to the proposals.  I welcome them and look forward to these measures assisting us to prevent anti-social behaviour and to create a much improved environment for the residents of Nuneaton and Bedworth”.

A public consultation on this proposal runs until 6 April 2007 and anyone wishing their views to be considered should put them in writing to Democratic Support Services at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, Town Hall, Nuneaton CV11 5AA by that date.
