Council Appoints New Smokefree Environment Officer

Smoke Free Nuneaton & Bedworth
Businesses across Nuneaton and Bedworth will be able to get specialist support and advice on how to prepare for the new smokefree legislation thanks to the appointment of Adrian Rowe, Smokefree Environment Officer with Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council.

Adrian has been appointed on a 12 month contract, with funding from central government, and will work alongside Environmental Health Officers over the next few months visiting businesses and providing practical advice and assistance about the new smokefree law. Although most businesses already have a good understanding and support for the legislation, Adrian will be an additional source of help should they require any further guidance. He will also be one of a team of officers, who from July 1st, will have an enforcement responsibility ensuring that all workplaces, work vehicles and enclosed public places are maintained smokefree at all times.

Geoff Ashford, the Councillor responsible for Health and the Environment said:

This is an important milestone for businesses in the borough, and we feel that it is vital to offer as much guidance as possible to ensure businesses are prepared for 1st July. The appointment of a Smokefree Environment Officer means that we can ensure that all businesses have rapid access to the information they need.’

Commenting on his appointment, Adrian said:

‘I’m really looking forward to helping people understand how the new legislation will affect them. I'll be working with employers to make sure they take responsibility for ensuring workplaces are kept smokefree by displaying appropriate signs, drawing up smoking policies and training their staff. We're here to help and anyone wanting advice about the new legislation should not be afraid to contact us.’

Anyone who has any questions about the new law or would like some advice should call Adrian on 024 7637 6462 or email adrian.rowe@nuneatonandbedworth.gov.uk or you can visit the Smokefree England website at www.smokefreeengland.co.uk.
