Celebrating Communities
The theme of the evening was ‘celebrating communities’ and around 200 guests packed out the Old Meeting United Reformed Church in Bedworth to its rafters for a special service led by the Reverend Helga Cornell.
Mayors and dignitaries were joined at the church by community representatives, members of the public and proud parents of youngsters aged between five and seven from Race Leys School in Bedworth, whose choir opened proceedings with a heart-warming performance.
During the service, readings were given from a wide range of faiths and beliefs and representatives from every community were encouraged to take part in ribbon weaving. The result of the ribbon weaving exercise was a piece of loom artwork that will be on offer for any of the community groups to put on show at their respective venues throughout the year.
Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth, Councillor Neil Phillips, said:
“I would like to thank everyone who attended and made my Civic Service such a memorable experience. In particular, special praise must go to Helga for helping to organise the service and to the children from Race Leys School who were fantastic.
“It was an event that will last long in the memory and the service made us all appreciate and reflect upon what a truly remarkable and diverse community the Borough of Nuneaton and Bedworth enjoys.”
The Civic Service is an annual church service hosted by the Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth and attended by other ‘chain gang’ members (mayors and council chairman) from across the Midlands. Invitations are also sent to representatives from a wide range of community and voluntary organisations.
