Businesses Clear The Air Ahead of Smokefree Law

Smoke Free Nuneaton & Bedworth
With only days to go until the new Smokefree legislation comes into force on 1st July, many restaurants and other businesses have decided to go smokefree early, including the Council and NHS. One of these premises is popular Nuneaton town centre restaurant ‘The Jailhouse’ who went smokefree on 17th May.

Kim Carr, Restaurant Manager said:

We went smokefree early because I value the health of my staff and customers. The Jailhouse has always been favoured for its healthy food choices and by going smokefree my customers can now benefit from eating healthy food in a clean, smokefree environment. I am also attempting my own quit attempt so not only will the restaurant be smokefree but the owner will too!’

The Jailhouse is not the only business that is taking this approach. Abbeygate Shopping Centre, The Griff Inn, Ellisons and Pastels Day Centre have all gone smokefree early.  The Griff Inn was the first business to go smokefree in March 2006 and, contrary to the fears of many, trade has never been better!

Our recently appointed Smokefree Environment Officer, Adrian Rowe alongside Environmental officers has been visiting businesses across Nuneaton and Bedworth over the last few months providing specialist support and advice about how to prepare for the new legislation. By 1st July all businesses and enclosed public places will need to ensure their premises are smokefree and display approved signs at each entrance to the premises.

Geoff Ashford, the Councillor responsible for Health and the Environment said:

‘It is great to see so many businesses taking such a proactive approach to the new smokefree law. We feel that is it vital to offer as much guidance as possible to ensure that businesses are ready for 1st July and to this effect have sent information to every business in Nuneaton and Bedworth about what steps they need to take to comply with the new law. For the first time all workers will be protected at their workplaces from the effects of second hand smoke’

The smokefree message is also being spread throughout Nuneaton and Bedworth through an extensive advertising campaign. Taxis, buses and car park tickets have all been emblazoned to raise awareness of this milestone event.
