Bedworth Town Centre Redevelopment

Land at George Street Ringway and Leicester Street in Bedworth is set for a comprehensive redevelopment with an all-new Tesco store forming its centrepiece.

St James’s Investments, in partnership with Tesco Stores Limited, is proposing to redevelop the land to provide a 92,000 sq ft store with glazed atrium, a number of small retail units and kiosks, a petrol filling station and a 518-space surface level car park.  The scheme will also allow for George Street Ringway to be opened up to two-way traffic while through-traffic will be removed from Leicester Street and Mill Street, which are also to benefit
                                                                  from environmental improvements.

The new development would safeguard 340 existing jobs and create 150 new jobs.  Tesco has signed a Local Employment Partnership agreement with Job Centre Plus to ensure that recruitment of these jobs is focused locally.

The Council has been involved in ongoing talks with Tesco since May 2007 concerning the proposal to redevelop their existing store in Bedworth Town Centre to provide a new, larger store that will improve customer shopping experiences.

The proposed comprehensive redevelopment of this site is identified within the Town Centre Masterplan.

Peter Gilbert, Leader of the Council, said:

“This is really positive news for Bedworth which confirms the long-term future of Tesco in Bedworth Town Centre.

“Following the redevelopment by Aldi, the proposed Tesco development and the many other environmental improvements, the majority of the Masterplan objectives for Bedworth Town Centre will have been delivered by the Council.”

The proposed development would lead to the loss of the Council’s pay and display 411-space multi storey car park in George Street – which at present is significantly under used – along with the 25-space Mill Street surface level car park and the existing 128-space Tesco car park.  This loss of car parking would be addressed by a new 518-space surface level Tesco car park, which would be free of charge for the first two hours to users and town centre visitors.

A temporary store will be opened on the site to accommodate customers while the redevelopment work takes place.
