litter on the street takes all forms
A man appeared at Nuneaton Magistrates Court on Monday 26th March for not paying a £75 fixed penalty fine, which followed an incident in Mill Walk, Nuneaton on 8th. November 2006. He was fined £300 for the offence and costs of £180. The man, a Wayne Francis of Nuneaton, did not appear and was found guilty in his absence.
Councillor Geoff Ashford, Cabinet Member for Health and Environment said,
“The Council does take litter seriously and we are very keen to ensure our towns are clean and kept that way. The public can help by ensuring any litter is disposed of in the litterbins around the towns or taken home so the streets are a pleasant place to walk and leaves a good impression. The fixed penalty tickets are only given out in extreme circumstances, as we would wish to encourage people to have some pride in our towns. If someone willingly does not comply then the Council will enforce the law.”
No Butts - Bin It!
The Town Centre Wardens were given the authority to issue fixed penalty tickets in September 2006. Since then they have been encouraging and educating the visitors to the town centre to take pride and not to drop litter. Businesses in the towns also fully support the council’s action as it helps attract people to the towns if the areas are clear of litter. There is pride in the towns of Nuneaton and Bedworth and the council are presenting the message to all residents and visitors to help keep them clean and clear of litter. It is also encouraging the careful disposal of cigarette ends as these amount to litter. Several people have been issued fixed penalty tickets for littering when they have refused to pick their rubbish up upon request and this includes refusing to pick up a cigarette end.
The council also remind drivers that they could also be issued a £75 fixed penalty ticket for litter if they are seen throwing litter or cigarette ends from their car.
Councillor Ashford also said:
“We ask the residents and visitors to our Borough to have respect for it. We are determined to ensure that the area is clean and with the help of the residents of Nuneaton and Bedworth we have a clean Borough to be proud of.”
