Nuneaton and Bedworth Heart Towns

Cllr Chris Watkins, Artie Heart and Cllr Bill Sheppard
‘Heart Town’ status has been awarded to Nuneaton and Bedworth – and the Council is now calling on residents to ‘show some heart’ by getting involved.

The Borough was awarded the accolade by the British Heart Foundation in the summer of 2011 and work will take place over five years to promote healthy hearts within local communities.

Various health and well-being partners from across Warwickshire have pledged to support the campaign alongside the Council and residents of the Borough also have a part to play and are being encouraged to fundraise or volunteer to help spread the Heart Town message to people of all ages.

Heart disease is the UK’s biggest killer and Nuneaton and Bedworth has historically suffered from a particularly high number of heart disease cases among patients.  A number of individuals have already expressed an interest in taking part in healthy, awareness-raising events in the name of Heart Town and it is hoped that many more residents will help keep the message of healthy hearts firmly in the public eye.

‘Heart Champion,’ Councillor Chris Watkins, said:
“The Heart Town status has really caught the imagination of local people and a number of residents have approached me with fund and awareness-raising ideas they are planning to organise.  The more events planned the better as it will only help to remind people of the importance of looking after their heart.

“Events such as sponsored bike rides, walks, runs or anything that promotes healthy living would be ideal to raise awareness of our Heart Town – I am sure the people of Nuneaton and Bedworth can think of some great ways of supporting this venture.”

By becoming a Heart Town, the Borough will benefit from a range of resources, education programmes and support services provided by the British Heart Foundation.  The charity launched the initiative as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations and to help raise funds for its ‘Mending Broken Hearts’ appeal.

Councillor Bill Sheppard, Health and Environment Portfolio holder, said:
“As a Council we are committed to promoting healthy living among all of our residents and the Heart Town status can only benefit the work we are already doing to raise awareness and, ultimately, improve the health of our residents.  It is well documented that our Borough has high rates of heart disease and the Council is committed to tackling the factors that are contributing to this.”
