Building Sights
A unique exhibition will arrive at the museum in September created by young people from across the Borough. With support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and help from Mercurial Arts, the young people have researched how we currently identify, nominate and care for our built heritage. They have also asked the wider community to nominate which buildings and places they love in Nuneaton and Bedworth. Building Sights exhibition displays the results of this project using digital photography, a ‘soundscape’ and objects from the museum’s collection that have inspired the young people’s work.

See results of the nominations in the display and find out the stories behind people’s choices. Discover how the Borough’s landscape has changed over recent years. You can also nominate your own memorable building or feature in the exhibition or by visiting www.buildingsights.org

Test yourself, how many local buildings can you recognise in one of our activities at this exhibition? Building and colouring activities will also be available for younger visitors.

Councillor Ian Lloyd, Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Communities stated:

‘Building Sights has provided an original and exciting opportunity for local young people. The project has enabled them to discover, research and engage with the wealth of architecture that exists in their Borough. The Building Sights exhibition is a celebratory showcase displaying the votes of all project participants that have nominated buildings which hold personal significance or familiarity. The results found in the exhibition will undoubtedly reveal many new aspects of the architecture we see locally. This innovative display will stimulate and encourage museum visitors to nominate further areas, adding to the Borough’s already rich heritage.’

This project is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Suitable for all of the family, entry to the museum is free!

Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition
The Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year is undoubtedly the most successful wildlife photography contest in the world, and it continues to inspire millions of people with images of the richness and variety of life on Earth.  This spectacular celebration of the world’s best wildlife photography arrives at Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery to display this collection of talented work locally.

The best of this year’s entries will be showcased alongside all winners, runners-up and commended photographs. Including entries across the competition’s 17 categories, this stunning exhibition of 95 works also has a specially composed soundtrack and a visually arresting slideshow.

Chair of the judging panel, Mark Carwardine said:

‘While there is no magic formula for winning and no hard and fast rules to explain why one photograph wins and another doesn’t, all winning shots have one thing in common – originality. The judges are looking for something that stops them in their tracks. The competition plays an increasingly crucial role in raising the profile of wildlife photography and generating awareness of conservation. Nothing speaks louder than an evocative photograph that stirs the imagination, tugs at the heart strings and engages the mind.’

Not far from Nuneaton and Bedworth lives Danny Green from Loughborough in Leicestershire, who became one of the winners for this year’s competition. Danny won the Nature in Black and White category with his image, starling wave in the 46th annual competition which attracted a record 43,135 entries from 94 countries and is widely considered the most prestigious of its type.

The Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2009 Competition is owned by the Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine, and sponsored by Veolia Environnement, the world leader in environmental services.

Activity sheets for young visitors will be available in the gallery. The museum is FREE for all visitors.
