Walks and Waterways

Swan on the River
Nuneaton and Bedworth have many unexpected tranquil spots, away from the bustle of towns, cities and motorways, yet within minutes of them all. Many have water as a feature, and many also make new, recreational use of former industrial sites.

Bedworth Water Tower is visible for miles. It looks particularly good from Bedworth Sloughs, an area of water created originally by mining subsidence. It is a popular spot for walking and relaxing, bounded on one side by the A444 and on the other by a large allotment site. It is best approached from Newtown Road.
Ensor's Pool
Nuneaton’s Ensor’s Pool was once a clay pit serving brick works and a nearby colliery. Both have now gone but the pool is a delight and has water of such clarity that rare crayfish breed. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and was designated a Special Area of Conservation in 2005. Approach it through the distinctive memorial gate on Heath End Road, Nuneaton, near Tenlons Road.
Barnacle Lane Wildlife Pond in Bulkington was previously derelict land. Due to improvement works and careful management, this environmental area was awarded Site of Importance for Nature Conservation Status in 2002. In 2004 the pond was restored to a haven for wildlife. The area is now a peaceful area to visit.

On the north west side of Nuneaton is the Windmill Hill Nature Reserve (please refer to leaflet at the bottom of this page), off Mancetter Road. This offers exhilarating walks, especially on windy days. From its high position you can look out over the canal, the A5 and into Leicestershire to the north, and on a clear day towards the Trentside power stations of Staffordshire.

For a real walking challenge head to Dobbies Garden World, and visit ‘Maze World’. At 2.44 miles, it sets a new record for the longest permanent maze in the world! Whilst here a visit to Plantasia is a must.
Canal
The Borough’s industrial past is very evident in the canal network. The Coventry Canal passes through the Borough and the towpath offers interesting walks and cycle routes. In summer the tourists’ pleasure boats make their leisurely way where horse drawn coal boats once worked.

At Hawkesbury Junction is a fine 1836 cast iron bridge where the Coventry and Oxford Canals meet. The disused engine house once pumped water to maintain levels in the canals. The Greyhound, winner of the 2005 Godiva Award for Best Pub offers great refreshments and views of the narrow boats. Take time to relax on a summer’s day with a meal and drink, or enjoy the open fire during the winter months.
Cycling - Sustrans Route 52
On the outskirts of Bedworth, at Marston Lane, the Ashby Canal joins the Coventry Canal. Here you can join the towpath to cycle or walk into Nuneaton. Venture through Nuneaton on Sustrans route 52 which leads you to the beautiful Leicestershire countryside and Bosworth Battlefield.

Further north, at Atherstone, a series of locks offers picturesque views.
‘Your Green Track’ is a network of walkways throughout the Borough linking well-used public footpaths, bridle ways and towpaths. It is available as a series of leaflets with maps and information.
