Mayor's Appeal 2012-2013 Zoe's Place Baby Hospice

Councillor John Haynes became Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth following the annual council meeting at the Town Hall - his second spell in the Civic role.

He was also Mayor in 1983-1984 and is relishing his chance to don the chains for a second time.  The Mayor-making ceremony took place at the Town Hall on Wednesday, 16 May 2012 and saw last year's Mayor, Councillor Neil Phillips, hand over the chains of office in front of other elected members, local media, representatives of local schools, ex-Mayors and Mayoresses and members of the public.

Following his appointment as Mayor, Councillor Haynes launched his charity appeal and has announced that Zoe's Place Children's Hospice will be the beneficiary of the Mayor's Appeal.  The hospice is based in Exhall and provides specialist respite care, palliative care and end of life care for terminally ill babies and young children.  The hospice relies entirely upon charitable donations to provide running costs and receives no Government or NHS funding.  It costs approximately £800,000 per year to operate and the hospice is currently supporting 22 families.

Councillor Haynes is keen to raise as much money as possible for this worthy cause and is appealing to members of the public and community groups to come forward with any fundraising initiatives they may have.  Several businesses in attendance on the day kindly pledged funds or facilities to the Mayor's Appeal, helping to get off to the best possible start.

The Mayor's wife, Hilda Haynes, becomes the Mayoress and Councillor Bob Copland has been welcomed as the new Deputy Mayor.

Anyone interested in helping to raise funds is asked to call the Mayor's Appeal Committee on 024 7638 3318.
