Partnership Saves Awards!

Councillor Ian Lloyd and Jamal Ullah at the Covent
Earlier this year, officers from North Warwickshire and Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Councils took over the organisation of the Coventry and Warwickshire Food and Drink Awards.

Tourism Officers Rachel Samways, from North Warwickshire Borough Council and Rose Selwyn, from Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council recognised the benefits to businesses of the scheme and in consultation with their respective portfolio holders,  decided that the awards were too important to lose as they benefit local businesses in the food and drink sector.  And in true partnership spirit,  they have worked together to stage the Coventry and Warwickshire Food and Drink Awards on behalf of the sub-regional steering group, which comprises eleven partners, Warwickshire County Council  and its 5 district councils, North Warwickshire, Nuneaton and Bedworth, Rugby, Stratford and Warwick, plus CV1, The Chamber, Heart of England Fine Foods, Henley College and Quality in Tourism.

Nine months work on the 2006 awards and they have yielded an excellent response. With 72 entries received from across Coventry & Warwickshire, this has really proved that businesses support the scheme.  Over 130 participants came together last week at the awards presentation evening.  A previous winner in the Best Ethnic Restaurant category, Jamal Ullah owner of the Agra Palace in Nuneaton received Highly Commended in this year’s awards scheme. He was able to report on the positive effects of winning an award, including the recruitment of two additional staff and a rise in Agra Palace’s profits of a staggering 15%!!

The portfolio holders from the two authorities attended the presentation evening and  Councillor Ian Lloyd from Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council said

“This is a fantastic example of how much can be achieved when Local Authorities work in partnership.  It shows how well restaurants, tea rooms & cafes, and other businesses including producers benefit from these sorts of award schemes.  The prestige an award offers the business in marketing terms is of great benefit to owners and customers alike”.

Councillor Joan Lea from North Warwickshire Borough Council reinforced his sentiments claiming

“This project is clearly a great opportunity to promote businesses in the area and help put Coventry and Warwickshire on the map”.
