Making Home Improvements
You as a tenant you can carry out improvements to your home provided you get written permission first from the Council. Permission cannot be refused without good reason, but the Council is required to ensure that the work is done properly and without damage to the building or components.
Each application is considered separately and permission is given subject to any conditions that may be appropriate. It is your responsibility to check whether Planning Consent and either Building Regulation Approval or deposit a Building notice as required under building regulations where necessary.
For Planning and Building Regulations information that may affect your application you can view Planning pages or Building Control pages.
If you make initial enquiries before submitting an application to Housing Services this will save time and any personal expense to yourself.
Note: There are other conditions, which are applicable and are clearly stated on all letters of permission. It is in your interest when considering alterations that you engage a qualified reputable contractor.
- You must not start any improvements until written permission has been granted.
- If damage is caused during or by any alteration/improvement, it must be made good at your expense.
- Future maintenance, if required on any improvement/alteration will not be met by the Council, for example servicing to gas appliances.
- Applications will not be granted if the rent account is not clear.
If permission is not given, we will write to you giving the reasons. If you are not satisfied with the decision you have the right to appeal, to the Assistant Director - Housing.
If you have made any alterations/improvements to your home since 1st April 1994, you may be entitled to "Right to Compensation for Improvements". This means that subject to certain conditions if you end your tenancy you can apply to the Council for compensation towards the cost of these improvements.
