Council Tax is based on the assumption that there are 2 adults resident in a property, in situations where there is only one ADULT residing in the property, a discount of 25% may be granted.

Some people are "ignored" or disregarded when counting how many people are residing at a property, for example adults who are full-time students or severally mentally impaired are not counted for council tax purposes.

In situations where a property is not occupied by anyone at all, or where all occupants are disregarded, a discount of 50% will be granted, or even a full exemption of 100%, depending upon the circumstances involved.

Before you can be awarded a discount, you should complete the discount application form and provide relevant information if appropriate.  If you believe you may be entitled to receive a discount or exemption, or just want further information, please contact the Council's Billing Section or apply online.

How to Apply

  • Complete an application form either online or download the form.
  • Your application will then be assessed.
  • You will be contacted to confirm whether you are entitled to a discount.
  • If you are entitled to a discount, the award will commence on the date from which the circumstances have existed. This will be either the date from which you became liable for Council Tax or the date from which your household circumstances changed (whichever is later).

Conditions

Future Changes Of Circumstance - Any change in circumstances, which may affect any discount award (e.g. change of address, change in status) must be notified to the Council immediately at the address overleaf. Failure to do so may be subject to a penalty of £50.00

Reduction for Disabilities

Council Tax payers who are disabled or who live with a disabled person, may, in certain circumstances, be entitled to a reduction in their charge. You will be required to make written application, provide relevant information, and your property will be inspected.
