If you want to know more about the decision we have made on your claim or if you think it is wrong, you should get in touch with us within one month of the date of the decision.
Please get in touch by phone, in writing or by e-mail.
How should I appeal ?
You must appeal within one month of the decision notice.
You must submit your appeal in writing or via e-mail.
In all cases you must state the reason why you think the decision is wrong.
You can download a copy of the booklet 'What to do if you think the decision about your Benefit is wrong' from www.benefit-leaflets.org
What happens after the decision is looked at again ?
When you ask us to look at a decision again, we will check that the decision is correct. A different member of staff from the person who made the original decision will do this. If we find the decision is wrong, we will change it.
If the decision can be changed we will send you a new decision.
If we cannot change the decision we will send you a letter telling you that we cannot change it. The letter will confirm our original decision.
If you still disagree with our decision, you have one more month to appeal from the date of the new decision letter.
The appeal will be heard by an independent tribunal. They deal with appeals about Housing and Council Tax Benefit, other social security benefits, child support, vaccine damage, tax credit and compensation recovery. They are administered by the Tribunals Service which is part of the Ministry of Justice. For more information see www.appeals-service.gov.uk
Organisations that can help
You can contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau or the Welfare Rights Service if you want help to fill in the forms or write letters about your appeal. They can represent you and they will sometimes go with you to the tribunal that hears your appeal.
