In order to help make the best use of the housing stock in the borough the Council has developed an empty property strategy to help deal with homes that remain empty for long periods of time. There are around 1800 empty private homes in the borough which is about 3.8% of the private housing stock. Although there is always going to be some empty homes the numbers of empty properties for over 6 months is quite substantial, at around 950 (2% of the stock). The Council will aim to work with owners to help bring empty homes back in to use. The first step is to contact owners and offer advice and assistance.
We have a number of types of assistance that we may be able to offer including:
Grants and Loans
Help with finding tenants
Voluntary leasing (coming soon)
Advice on letting your property.
Inspections and assistance with renovation.
Part of the assistance we are able to offer is to list the types of property that are empty and aim to put prospective purchasers in touch with the owners. Purchasers may be developers or people seeking run down properties to renovate. We can not release the contact details of owners but we will provide them with the information of those who have expressed an interest.
