Conservation areas are defined as “areas of special architectural or historical interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance”.
Conservation areas can vary between different districts, and can be anything from Historic Towns to Rural Villages.
Usually chosen because of their buildings, conservation areas can also be designated for their history, architecture, parks and trees. Conservation areas give greater protection to the area as a whole that includes all the surrounding features, rather than a single listed building.
The council also has extra controls over the demolition of a building, or the demolition of parts of it. You will also need to make a planning application for changes to the buildings that would normally be acceptable in other areas.
Further information about the Abbey Conservation Area and the Bulkington Conservation Area is available on the Conservation Areas webpages.
