Biodiversity Action Plan

The Nuneaton and Bedworth Biodiversity Action Plan

Action for Wildlife

Aim:
To write Action Plans to offer advice to anyone who lives and/or works in the Borough on how to help the Natural Environment.

Scope:
To encourage the whole community to help prepare Action Plans with advice from specialist groups.  To write in targets we, as a community, will aim to meet.

How:
Organise annual Biodiversity events to encourage local people and companies to take up the initiative and sign-up to a working group whose remit will be to prepare and update Action Plans and meet the targets these set.  The working groups are:

Religious Buildings & Grounds
Recreational Areas
Wildlife & Geological Sites
Industrial & School Grounds
Marketing

Those in brackets are currently being written, so contact the Group Leader if you would like to help write any remaining Action Plans.

What is Biodiversity?

"Biodiversity is the variety of life.  Biodiversity is all living things, from the tiny garden ant to the giant redwood tree.  You will find biodiversity everywhere, in window boxes and wild woods, roadsides and rainforests, snow fields and seashores."

The word biodiversity comes form the amalgamation of 'biological diversity' which was used when the UK, with 169 other nations, signed the Convention on Biological Conservation at Rio de Janeiro in 1992.  The UK signed up to take action to halt the worldwide loss of species and habitats by taking responsibility to conserve and enhance its own species.

In 1994, after extensive consultation, the Government produced "Biodiversity, the UK Action Plan" and in 1995 established the "Biodiversity Steering Group" which produced the UK Steering Group Report.  This report contained 130 action plans for the UK's most important species and habitats.  More action plans are continually being added.
