How to suggest a new street name
- Contact us via one f the contact methods above with your suggestion.
- If your suggestion is appropriate we will try and use it.
How is street naming and postal numbering carried out?
The Council allocates names to new streets and numbers to new properties. In certain cases it is possible to change a street name or renumber a property.
Post Code allocation is the responsibility of the Royal Mail
How are new street names allocated?
In most situations the developer is asked to make a suggestion. The name should preferably be of local interest, continue an existing theme and not be the same, or similar, to another street in the Borough or surrounding areas. Before it is approved we consult the Post Office and ward members for comments.
How are new postal numbers allocated?
In most situations we number in the traditional manner of odd and even on either side of the street, sometimes we will use consecutive numbers. The number thirteen is used in all situations.
For in-fill developments where intermediate numbers are not available a letter suffix is used. Sometimes we will use a building name together with a number, such as flat developments. Names are not used without a number.
Numbers, or if allocated the combined name and number, should be displayed at all times in a prominent position.
If you wish to add your own name to your property this may be satisfactory as long as the correct street name and postal number is still used and displayed. You should contact Royal Mail to make sure that it does not conflict with another address.
Can a street name or postal number be changed?
Yes, however it is not a simple matter. You will need to write to us, explain your reasons and show that you have support for your proposals. Affected parties will need to change all property details, at their expense, and this can be complex.
Unless all affected parties are in agreement or there are exceptional circumstances it is unlikely that the request will be allowed. We would consult all affected parties, the Post Office and ward members for comments before making a decision.
We do not change the postal number 13.
