Nuneaton and Bedworth together with Warwickshire County Council and Police, are working hard to tackle Domestic Abuse. The information below shows examples of some of the work in progress.

Ashram Refuge

Ashram Refuge accepts referrals for any Black, Minority Ethnic and Refugee women and children experiencing domestic abuse. They have widened their referral criteria and will now accept referrals for women and children living in Nuneaton as well as from other areas. Any women and children from Nuneaton will be risk assessed on an individual basis to determine if it is safe for them to live in the refuge. To find out more about the Ashram refuge and make a referral please contact Tracy on 024 7632 5927

Nuneaton Refuge

The new temporary refuges in Nuneaton and North Warwickshire will open on the 5th November 207. For agency referrals to these refuges please contact WDVSS on 01788 537112. Progress is also continuing on the development of the permanent refuge in Nuneaton.

Police Initiatives

Public Misconduct Hearing starts on Monday 5 November.
A public misconduct hearing into whether two Warwickshire Police officers breached the Police Code of Conduct starts on Monday 5 November at Brownsover Hall, Rugby. The hearing will examine how the officers responded to a domestic abuse call in Rugby on 1 February 2005 ,  two days before Colette Lynch was tragically killed by her estranged partner Percy Wright on 3 February 2005.
A public hearing in the form of an inquest will occur in the future and this will examine all the circumstances that led up to Colette's death.
For more information on the hearing, please click on the link on the home page of our website www.warwickshire.police.uk   This will be updated as the hearing progresses.  We also anticipate extensive coverage in the media.

HMIC recognises Warwickshire Police improvement in service to domestic abuse victims
Since Colette Lynch was tragically killed almost three years ago, Warwickshire Police has thoroughly reviewed its response to domestic abuse and made significant  improvements  aimed at ensuring victims are protected from harm.
The improvements in this area have been recognised by the HMIC who in October 2007 gave Warwickshire Police a GOOD rating for protecting vulnerable people from Domestic Abuse in the county.  This places Warwickshire Police amongst the top 14 forces in England and Wales  but we are not complacent and plan to achieve more.
No single agency including the police has the ability to fully support victims on its own.  Success is therefore, dependent on effective multi agency working and we will be working alongside partners in the county to improve the services we provide to victims of domestic abuse.

Police apply for Christmas rapid response vehicle
Warwickshire Police has applied to the Home Office for funding to provide a rapid response vehicle over the Christmas period.  As the name implies the vehicle will provide a rapid response to incidents of domestic abuse using the latest digital technology to capture evidence to support a positive arrest policy and victimless prosecution.  This initiative and other improvements in the service offered to victims of domestic abuse will be publicised as part of a media led campaign aimed at reassuring victims of domestic abuse and deterring perpetrators over the Christmas period.
For more information, please contact Hazel Nicholas at Warwickshire Police on 01926 415723 or hazel.nicholas@warwickshire.police.uk

A Domestic Abuse consultation conference took place on the 1st November 2007. Ideas from this conference will be a starting point for the new Domestic Abuse Strategy and Action Plan.
