Travel and Accessibility
Progress as of June 2008
Warwickshire County Council's Local Transport Plan 2006-11 (www.warwickshire.gov.uk/ltp) is the document which sets out how the County Council will improve transport between 2006-11 and there are a number of schemes in Nuneaton and Bedworth which have been completed or are under development.
Completed projects
Nuneaton Development Project (phase 3):
The final phase of the Nuneaton Development Project, which aims to improve town centre accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users, was completed in June 2008.
The works involved widening both sides of A444 Roanne Ringway to create two lanes from Corporation Street Roundabout to the signalised junction with Queens Road, enabling buses and other traffic to pass queuing right turning traffic waiting to turn into Queens Road.

A bus gate has also been introduced at the end of Upper Abbey Street for inbound buses, controlled by the bus activating a pedestrian signal on Roanne Ringway which stops traffic on the ring-road and allows the bus to turn left.
To help people make journeys into and around town by bike and on foot, a shared use cycleway/footway has been created on Roanne Ringway and Newtown Road, completing the facility constructed on the ring road in previous phases of the project.

New and improved signalled crossing points have been provided to help pedestrians and cyclists cross to and from the town centre, together with a number of new cycle parking stands around the town centre.
Nuneaton Cycling Guide:
Warwickshire County Council published a new Cycling Guide in June 2008 to help people to make journeys in and around town by bike. The Cycling Guide is available free of charge from libraries, council offices, bike shops and other outlets and includes a cycle route map, together with a range of useful information for cyclists.

Projects under development
Griff roundabout signalisation scheme:
Warwickshire County Council has designed a scheme to address the serious injury accident history at Griff roundabout, to ease congestion and to provide crossing facilities to help pedestrians and cyclists access Bermuda Park. It is anticipated the scheme will be implemented in late 2008/9.
The works involve provision of traffic signals on some of the entries and exits, including crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. For more details of this scheme, click on this link http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/web/corporate/pages.nsf/(DisplayLinks)/ADC601DADD3EA40280257356003C7E96

Weddington Road cycle scheme:
Warwickshire County Council is funding this scheme to help complete National Cycle Network route 52 through Nuneaton. The scheme will provide cycle lanes along Weddington Road and over Leicester Road bridge, to connect to the existing cycle facilities on the ring road.
A new Toucan crossing is also proposed on Leicester Road. It is anticipated that the scheme will be implemented in phases during summer / autumn 2008.
Attleborough to Bermuda Park (via George Elliot Hospital) cycle scheme:
This cycle scheme is being developed by Warwickshire County Council to help more people to cycle to work, by improving access to key employment sites in Nuneaton. The scheme will also connect to the existing 'Wem Brook Trail' cycle route to the town centre and link more people to National Cycle Network route 52. Design work is underway and it is anticipated the scheme will be implemented in 2009.
Nuneaton bus station improvements:
Improvements to Nuneaton bus station are proposed as part of the Masterplan for the town centre and this project is currently at the design stage.
