Abbey Fields Nursery received £700 from the Community Plan Fund for lighting to the entrance of the building.
New security at Abbey Fields Nursery
Although it's a bright sunny morning in this picture, Abbey Fields Nursery and Out of School Care in Abbey Green, Nuneaton, is very different in the late evening or on gloomy winters evenings. The Community Plan Project Funding has granted the non-profit making nursery funding which will enable them to install security lighting. This will make their nursery a safer place for children, their parents and staff at the nursery. The nursery has recently expanded which has meant that installation of the lighting has had to be put on hold for the time being, but now the building work is almost complete, Abbey Fields is looking forward to a safer outdoor environment in the very near future.

Press Coverage
Abbey Fields Nursery is a not-for-profit organisation owned by the national Christian charity Spurgeons, and also forms part of Abbey Children’s Centre. It is registered with OFSTEAD as a day care centre and follows the Early Years Foundation Framework, which is based on Child Centred Education.
Catering for children between the ages of three and eight years old, the nursery is open 52 weeks a year and only closes on national bank holidays. There are approximately 20 staff and four volunteers. The nursery is open between 8am and 6pm.
Abbey Fields Nursery applied for £700 of funding to safeguard their property with security lighting at the front and rear of the building. They applied for the Community Plan Funding after experiencing several break-ins and finding evidence of anti-social behaviour on and around the premises. The application was successful and in November 2008 all the security lighting was installed.
Both the staff and families who use the nursery have benefited immensely from the lighting and have commented on how safe they now feel when arriving early in the morning, and leaving late at night. Local residents have also noticed a difference in the amount of anti social activity taking place on and around the premises when the nursery is closed. Since the security lighting has been installed there have been no break-ins. There have also been additional benefits such as light being provided for setting up play areas and putting away toys in the winter months when there is less sun light.
“The security lighting has made such a positive difference to us. Not only are we working in a noticeably safer environment, but the building is also being kept safe outside of working hours. The Community Plan Fund is a great idea and source of help for companies like ours.”
Jill Krusts, Abbey Fields Nursery
“It’s fantastic to see the Community Plan Funding making a difference. This is exactly the sort of project the money is intended to help and life should now be that little bit easier and safer for the staff, parents, and children who use the facilities at Abbey Fields Nursery.”
Cllr David Bryden, NBBC
