A licence is required before any person can drive a private hire vehicle. Licences are issued subject to proof of eligibility (age, driving licence, criminal records check, medical assessment etc.).
How to Apply
- The licence is valid for 3 years.
- An application form must be submitted with the fee.
- The current fee is £66 which includes the fee payable to the Criminal Records Bureau for a Disclosure check of convictions.
- At the time of your application, you will also need to submit a medical examination form so that the Council can arrange the examination - this will cost an additional £75 (which must be submitted with your application).
- Alternatively you can arrange the medical with your own doctor.
- You will need to visit the Licensing office to submit your proof of ID supporting evidence - please see below.

Applications are only processed if the correct fee has been submitted at the same time.
Support Evidence
- To process your application, we need a number of documents as supporting evidence of your identity.
- You must submit your driving licence plus two other forms of ID, one of which must show your current residential address.
- Examples include; utility bill, council tax bill, passport, bank statement, etc.
