Pet Shop Licences

The Pet Animals Act 1951 requires any shop that sells pets (livestock) to be licensed by the local authority. Officers inspect the premises annually to ensure that animals are kept in a clean, safe environment as well as to check compliance with general health and safety requirements.

  • Applicants for a pet shop licence must not be disqualified from keeping a pet shop.

Application Evaluation Process
  • An application form must be submitted annually along with the correct licence fee
  • Licences are usually issued within one week if no inspection is needed.
  • If an inspection is needed, a licence will be issued within approximately two weeks.

Tacit consent will apply.

To appeal against decisions
If you are refused a licence there is a statutory right of appeal to the Secretary of State.
