A hackney carriage is more commonly called a taxi. The Council licences and inspects both hackney carriages and private hire vehicles in the Borough to ensure that they are safe for use by the public.
Applicants for new hackney carriage plates must obtain an offer of a plate (no fee is payable for this) before presenting a vehicle for licensing (form available for download at the foot of the page).
The vehicle licence application form which can be used for either a hackney carriage or private hire vehicle licence is available for download at the foot of this page along with guidance about what we will expect when you present the vehicle for testing..
How to Apply
- In the case of a renewal an application form must be submitted along with the fee BEFORE THE EXISTING LICENCE EXPIRES.
- Supporting documentary evidence must be provided at the time of your application.
- You must submit your vehicle registration document, MOT test certificate and your certificate of vehicle insurance.
Fees are currently:
Vehicle Licence Application £150
Vehicle Test/ Full Re-test £ 85
Test Cancellation Fee £ 30 (where less than 24 hours notice received)
(full fee charged if appointment not kept and no notice received)
Replacement Plate £ 15
Conditions
- Applications for new Hackney Carriage plates are processed at the beginning of each month.
- Applications are only processed providing the correct fee has been submitted.
