A hackney carriage is more commonly called a taxi. The Council licences and inspects hackney carriages in the Borough to ensure that they are safe for use by the public.
Applicants for new hackney carriage plates must obtain an offer of a plate (no fee is payable for this) before presenting a vehicle for licensing.
How to Apply
- In the case of a renewal or once the offer of a plate has been made, an application form must be submitted along with the fee.
- Supporting documentary evidence must be provided at the time of your application.
- You must submit your vehicle registration document, MOT test certificate and your certificate of vehicle insurance.

Conditions
- New Hackney carriage plate applications are only processed at the beginning of each month.
- Applications are only processed providing the correct fee has been submitted.
