A licence is required before any person can drive a hackney carriage (taxi) or private hire vehicle. Licences are issued subject to proof of eligibility (age, driving licence, criminal records check, medical assessment, road knowledge etc.).
The Council issues a joint licence to drive taxis and private hire vehicles and all of the forms and information you require are available at the foot of this page to down load EXCEPT the Criminal Records Disclosure application. Unfortunately, this is not available in electronic format and must be collected from the Town Hall.
How to Apply
- The licence is usually valid for 3 years (although in certain circumstances a shorter period may be granted).
- An application form must be submitted with the fee.
- You must be subject to a check with the Criminal Records Bureau for a Disclosure report of convictions.
- You will be required to undergo a medical examination with the Council's approved medical examiner or alternatively you can arrange the medical with your own doctor.
- You will need to visit the Licensing office to submit your proof of ID supporting evidence - please see below.
- New applicants must undertake and pass a road knowledge test.
- Applicants for renewal should ensure that their application is lodged with the Council at least 21 days prior to the expiry of the existing licence.
The fees payable are:
Application for driver's licence £60
CRB fee £36
Re-take of knowledge test £22
Temporary Badge £11.50
Replacement Badge/ Licence £11.50
DVLA Licence check (where required) £ 7.50
Conditions
Applications are only processed if the correct fee has been submitted at the same time.
Support Evidence
- To process your application, we need a number of documents as supporting evidence of your identity.
- You must submit your current driving licence plus two other forms of ID, one of which must show your current residential address (eg Examples include: passport, utility bill, bank statement etc).
